About the ČEZ Dukovany Nuclear Power Plant

The Dukovany Nuclear Power Plant is the first nuclear power plant built in the Czech Republic and the largest employer in the region. The plant directly employs 3,000 ČEZ Group employees and contractors. A study by Charles University found that the plant’s operation is associated with up to thirty thousand jobs.

Too Many Cars, Few Parking Spaces

Due to a significant increase in the number of cars used for commuting and low utilization of public transport, the power plant faced a parking shortage, leading to employee dissatisfaction over the lack of parking spaces. As a result, some drivers began parking along unmarked spots on nearby roads, reducing traffic safety.

Despite constructing a new parking lot with a capacity of 322 spaces, ČEZ opted for a long-term sustainable solution to encourage employees and contractors to optimize and reduce the number of cars arriving daily, thereby reducing traffic congestion and CO₂ emissions.

In 2022, Dukovany employees saved approximately 100,000 kilograms of CO₂ that would otherwise have been released into the atmosphere.

Carpooling Equals Fewer Cars in the Parking Lot

Together with ČEZ, we launched an information campaign to attract the first users of the Yedem Carpool app. Within days of the announcement, carpooling was operational. Through the app, all employees and contractors could share rides, whether commuting from nearby areas or farther away. Users who offered rides to colleagues and shared their commute received guaranteed parking spaces for the entire day. Passengers also earned reward points.

Cooperation with the service provider has been very effective and reliable from the very beginning. From their approach, there was a real interest in the functioning of the system and an effort to solve the problem of parking. In a very short time, they conducted a user questionnaire survey, based on which they improved some functionalities and the application environment to meet the needs of users even more. Thanks to this, the interest in reserved parking is above expectations and the number of cars arriving at the power plant with two or more passengers is still growing.Ing. Year-on-year reduction of several dozen cars daily

In the first few months, hundreds of employees and contractors signed up for the Yedem app. The carpooling initiative gained momentum, and soon we recorded dozens of shared rides daily. The power plant saw a year-on-year reduction of several dozen cars daily. During a nuclear block outage, when the number of workers doubles compared to regular operations, up to 200 parking spaces were saved daily.

In just six months of carpooling, Dukovany employees saved approximately 18,000 kilograms of CO₂ that would otherwise have been released into the atmosphere. Over the entire year of 2022, employees saved about 100,000 kilograms of CO₂. Another positive outcome is that employees enjoy greater flexibility and lower commuting costs through carpooling. The number of passengers increases monthly, while the number of cars decreases—bringing collective benefits for everyone.
